Why do we write?

Today's post was submitted by Douglas Clarke.  Thank you for being a part of the Writer's Hole!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We love to write, we hate to write, so why do we write?

Fame
Fortune
To share yourself
To connect with others
Because your heart is screaming inside
To leave something for our children
It's your job
or something else completely ...

For me it is therapy. By writing down the stories that my characters are going through, I deal with the same feelings, if not the same situations, that they do. But working out how my characters deal with issues, I work out some of my own issues.

I write because I have characters inside of me, banging on the walls of my subconscious, demanding that their story be told.

Or else.

because it makes me come alive, and as i come alive, the people around me come alive.

Especially because we are responsible for feeding and taking care of them, right Michelle? LOL!

I write for all sorts of reasons, not the least of which is...

- to share a part of myself (my thoughts, my feelings, my inclinations)
- to connect with others (even a small group of others)
- to leave a legacy behind (if not for my own children - who I may never have - then for others' kids)
- to deal with my own inner turmoil (after all, it's cheaper than therapy)
- to quell the desire within (in other words, I can't NOT write)
- to pay the bills (at least when it comes to my travel writing - fiction is another matter, however)

Thanks for the food for thought, Douglas!

P.S. Christine, I dedicated my jelly donut to you today!

I write because the characters within me are clammoring to get out. It also takes me on the journey I long to be able to take, but can't.

And (to borrow a phrase from a friend) when I write, I feel God's pleasure.

Pam,

I'll echo you last comment and add," I hear God speaking to me."
