"When you write you tell yourself a story. When you rewrite you take out everything that is NOT the story."
— Stephen King

Stephen King also says that he is "the literary equivalent of a Big Mac and fries." I haven't read any of his books, so I can't comment on that. Horror is not my genre.

But, I can say that my goal is to be the literary equivalent of a spinach quiche. Healthy, satisfying, a little bit unusual, and appealing to those who are tired of Big Macs.

I really like that first quote. One of the best things I ever did for my writing was learn to write flash fiction. It forces you to strip out everything non-essential.

As to the second quote, Charles Dickens and Mark Twain were the Big Mac and fries of their day and they're classics now. You just never know what future generations will think. I've read some sources that opine even Shakespeare was considered a bit of a hack in his day, but I haven't tried to track down the evidence to confirm or refute this.

Mmm... spinach quiche. That's all I had to say. :-)

Christine, it sounds like you and me are just way too much alike. I just finished reading "In Writing". Great book...and I'm not "into" horror either...

Hi JJ!
I haven't read "On Writing" yet, but I found that quote online. I've heard that it's excellent, though.
